Abre Caminho - Necklace
A wearable blend of cultural tradition, recycled artistry, and sound, this one-of-a-kind necklace brings together craftsmanship, global materials, and a deeply tactile design.
Measuring 33 inches long, the necklace features striking light-orange and cobalt-blue recycled glass beads from Ghana, West Africa. These beads are made by the Krobo tribe using a centuries-old method in which discarded glass from beverage and medicine bottles is crushed into powder and fired in clay molds. This process transforms waste glass into vibrant beads while preserving a cultural tradition passed down through generations.
Suspended along the strand are multi-origin brass bells from the percussion collection of legendary Brazilian musician and NEA Jazz Master, Airto Moreira. Accumulated over time on his global adventures, these bells bring a subtle musical presence to the necklace.
Tibetan mala prayer spacers add a spiritual element to the design, and the piece is finished with a vintage hook-and-eye clasp.
Beyond its visual beauty, the necklace invites interaction. The bells and glass beads move gently beneath the fingers, creating a soft chime and soothing tactile sensation. A gentle sound is created as the wearer moves, producing a calming effect.
